Abuja House On The Rock Holds Valedictory Service For Pastor Goodheart Ekwueme And Wife, Pastor Paul Adefarasin Conspicuously Absent At Event

THE controversy trailing the sudden exit of Pastor Goodheart Obi Ekwueme from House On The Rock seemed to continue with the absence of Pastor Paul Adefarasin at the valedictory service held today in Abuja in honour of the former and his wife, Pastor Bimbo. (Read story of his resignation here).

Worshippers had arrived early to witness the Founder and President of House on the Rock, Pastor Paul Adefarasin “bless and release” Pastor Ekwueme, arguably one of the foremost pastors in the church, but were left disappointed.

However, in a video message, Pastor Adefarasin stated that the resignation of Pastor Ekwueme was a ‘shock’ and an ‘awkward season’ for the local assembly.

He thanked Pastor Ekwueme for serving ‘the vision faithfully for over 17 years’, after meeting him in ‘the mid-1990s in his (Pastor Adefarasin’s) mother’s home’.
Responding to the goodwill messages from church members, including a 7 minute documentary of ‘members' speak’, , Pastor Ekwueme decked in an all-white attire, together with his wife, noted that today is ‘a historic day’.

He also stated that, ‘it was a tough decision to leave the church’. Continuing, he noted that ‘he had no intention to leave (the church), or cause pain to anyone, but he had to obey God’.

‘We are not going away, we are stepping aside to another assignment’, he stated.

Pastor Ekwueme also celebrated Pastor Adefarasin and enjoined the congregation to stand in Pastor Adefarasin’s honour. He encouraged the congregation with a reading from the Bible; 2Kings 3:16, urging them to remain steadfast.

Though the event was streamed live, it was observed that shortly before Pastor Ekwueme mounted the stage to deliver his address, the live streaming was shut down. No reason was given for this.

Some people speculate that the media team was concerned that Pastor Ekwueme may make uncomplimentary remarks. A church member Naija Magazine Online (NMO) spoke with dismissed this saying, ‘Pastor Ekwueme is a fine gentleman with a lot of respect for his ‘father’ and congregation. He knows too well what to say and not say in public’.

Attempts by NMO to have a chat with Pastor Ekwueme were unsuccessful.
