THE Operation Whirl Stroke has said it arrested over 40 suspected cultists in Benue State during the Yuletide.

Its Commander, Major Gen. Adeyemi Yekini, stated this on Saturday in an interview with journalists in Makurdi, Benue State.

Yekini also said the troops recovered two weapons at Ikpayongo in the Gwer East Local Government Area of the state last Thursday.

The OPWS boss said the suspected cultists had been handed over to the police.

He said between December and January 12, there had been relative peace in the state, stressing that more troops were being regularly deployed to flashpoints to curtail any threat to lives and property.

“Troops have continually worked towards ensuring that peace is sustained in the state, aside from its primary duty to contain the activities of armed herdsmen, the troops during the yuletide period arrested over 40 cult members and they have been handed over to the police.

“Also two days ago (Thursday), we made new deployment of troops to some areas just to ensure that every area is secured. You can see that for sometimes now, there has been relative peace in the state.”

The force commander promised that adequate security would be provided before, during and after the elections. He therefore charged the people to go about their lawful business without fear. (PunchNg)
